I have just had to put a hap lite in to be a client to a Vodafone 4g wifi modem and bring that connection back into my network via Ethernet. All works really well but wondering if anyone has any experience with firewall rulesets and or application filtering to block big data use such as MS/Apple updates, apple iCloud backups etc etc. I've been thinking about just some big IP range drops for the big companies such as Apple and MS and AWS but thought maybe there is a better way. Anyone.

Hey there, It is my experience that anything cable provided is prone to excessive congestion and also IP Address changes at a whim - it is considered to be a residential service after all. Congestion will cause slowness to the internet and that is purely and simply due to the amount of people using the same cable in the street or area. Remember it is just one cable from the pole going to every location in the street or neighbourhood so it is very prone to congested periods no matter what you do at the clients end. In the past, I have copied the Mac of the first device that connects to the Cable Modem and used that in the Router, or I would log into the cable modem and address the advanced settings to resolve the issues of 1 x Mac connection only or get rid of the modem completely if I can and use a better model. Perhaps using Dynamic DNS would assist you in your endeavours if you need to address the Mikrotik Router. Just my 2 cents worth. Hi Mike, It must be a device operating system issue where the Wifi driver signals a link break of some kind to the TCPIP stack. One thing I have wondered but don't know the answer to, if a client switches AP's even on the same SSID is a DHCP request made at re-connection? I suppose the answer is yes - the client would reset all IP connections as the network settings *may* change with a new DHCP request. This is how a trick like keeping the AP MAC the same as a client roams would stop devices closing their connections as no new DHCP request is made. One thing to try would be to run OpenVPN on the sensitive clients. My limited experience in the past shows you can break and make your ethernet or ADSL connection and OpenVPN will resume any connections it's encapsulating like nothing happened. So, OpenVPN client paired with a Mikrotik OpenVPN server and set as the default route would ensure a client like Facetime or SIP VoIP would still keep running as the hullabaloo of switching AP's would be abstracted away from the client application and it won't drop the connection. Seamless roaming

I have here at home two Mikrotik devices set up with WIFI. Each has: * The same SSID. * RSTP bridging with WIFI andf Eth as members. * Access list with the cutoff signal below -80. The access list works well and it's easy to see the devices hop from one access point to the other instead of the device holding with a vice grip to the original but very weaker signal which is what would normally happen. The issue is that Facetime drops when this access point transition occurs. On client sites with multiple radios I haven't used something like Facetime to check signal transitions rather just wandered about with the laptop reloading web pages or playing Youtube videos with no discernible problems. Is there anything I can do to mitigate the fickleness of Facetime and presumably other real time applications like Skype and SIP VoIP when switching access points? Jason

Hey all, Just had a bunch of my CCRs crashing within a few minutes of each other around 10:00am, the only ones which didn’t crash were ones not running NTP. Just curious if this has happened to anyone else today or for people not on a CCR? Kyle.

ANZ MikroTik User Meetings

Hi Guys, It's been a bit quiet here lately, so thought I'd send a brief post to everyone ;) I received an update from Janis @ MikroTik the other day reporting attendances at the recent MUM events in Melbourne and Wellington. Melbourne was attended by 162 people - that's numbers through the door :) Compared to 105 in Sydney (2013) and 126 in Brisbane (2011) that's an excellent turn-out! The presentations were top calibre, and I reckon that the event ran quite smoothly! There was some excellent detail in the "RouterOS developments" presentation by Janis Megis (MikroTik software engineer)which is well worth watching/reviewing in case you missed it. Hi I had one of my ccr's dye last night, just locked up, very annoying had just finished dinner ! /system watchdog> print watch-address: none watchdog-timer: yes no-ping-delay: 5m automatic-supout: yes auto-send-supout: no why didn't this kick in ? I'm not watching an address but I do have the timer on ? should have I expected this to have auto restarted. When I got to the box the touch wasn't working !

Paul, I cannot recommend highly enough the services of someone like m2mone (m2mone.com.au) as a reseller/supplier of telstra wholesale m2m SIMs and products. Ordering a SIM with telstra.extranet APN access, or even a static IP, is then a simple matter of making a quick call/sending a quick email asking for a SIM to be sent out.
