Different transmit power hAP ac2 vs RB951Ui-2hND
by Karl Auer 08 Jul '24

08 Jul '24

Just curious about something. We needed some ad-hoc wifi in a small raked theatre with perhaps 30m through clear air in a straight line-of-sight from the control room (sound and lighting decks) to the stage. An hAP ac2 was losing connections all the time at that distance. An old RB951Ui-2hND was solid. The doco says the 2.4GHz transmit power differs - 30/25/30/23 vs 27/24/27/23. Is that difference enough to explain the dropouts? Why would the newer device have so much less power? Needed to share it with the 5GHz side perhaps? Both are running 7.15.1 BTW. 7.15.1 removed all my wireless interfaces (not really)
by Karl Auer 21 Jun '24

21 Jun '24

That was exciting. I upgraded from 7.11.2 to 7.15.1 on my long- suffering home router (a hAP ac^3 that's always the first against the wall) and all the wireless interfaces disappeared. Not just disabled - they were no longer present in the interface list. I rapidly downgraded back to 7.11.2. Luckily only minor cuts and abrasions, thanks for asking. All the wireless interfaces came back. Maybe I should read changelogs more. I found this in the 7.13 changelog: "Drivers for older wireless and 60GHz interfaces, as well as the wireless management system CAPsMAN, are now part of a separate "wireless" package instead of being a part of the bundle package. This package can be uninstalled if not needed." Cool, cool... Is the Dude's real name Wally?
by Karl Auer 20 Jun '24

20 Jun '24

... because I can't seem to find him. The docs (and numerous helpful websites) say he is downloadable from the Mikrotik downloads page, but there I find only the client, a Windows executable. Not the server package. I'm sure that like Wally, he will be obvious when pointed out, but I could use a tap with the cluestick here... Best units for a 100m LOS radio link?
by Karl Auer 02 Apr '24

02 Apr '24

Some years ago I set up a very short-haul radio link between two buildings - only about 100m - using two SXT 5hnD units. It's been working well, but more and more things are being pushed over that link and the client is looking for something faster. There is (or will be) gigabit on both ends of this link. Any recommendations? MikroTik User Meeting (MUM) in Australia?
by Mike Everest 25 Mar '24

25 Mar '24

Hello everyone! Since the last official MUM event to be scheduled (Prague, Czech Republic, March 2020) was cancelled in 2020 due to the arrival of COVID, MikroTik have stated that they have 'temporarily' ceased running MUM events in favour of concentrating on their YouTube channel production. So far, there continues to be no MUM event planning for the foreseeable future. Having attended all 4 MUM events in Australia to date, as well as several international MUM events, I've been greatly missing the opportunity to hear from our MikroTik peers around Australia and the world, and to mix with all my favourite MikroTik folks (you know who you are! ; ) and to meet new MikroTik converts, enthusiasts and pros. So I've been thinking about the concept of running our own MikroTik event sometime later this year or during first part of 2025, and interested to hear opinions from everyone out there in MikroTik-Land about whether such a thing is worth exploring further.. I've thrown together a quick survey aimed at getting a feel for whether there might be sufficient interest to run such an event, and (of course) how much it would cost us to run it! ; ) I'm hopeful that I could waylay about 5 minutes of your time to respond to these questions - EVEN IF you have zero interest in attending (that is just as useful information as any!) I'll happily report back here on a summary of responses :-} Here's the survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TJ9LJCQ Thanks in advance, and hope we can get something up and running and see you all there! : ) Cheers, Mike.

MT as a "media converter" - wifi to wired
by Karl Auer 19 Mar '24

19 Mar '24

I'm trying to use a spare Mikrotik router - an old 951G-2hnD - as a sort of media converter. The idea is that it associates with a mobile phone hotspot, and provides wired access to it. However, I want LAN-side devices to get their IP addresses from the phone, not the Mikotik. To that end I first reset the router to the default configuration. Then I configured the wireless interface as "mode=station-bridge", and added the phone's SSID. In the relevant security profile I set authentication-mode to wpa-psk and wpa2-psk, and put the phone's key into wpa-pre-shared-key and wpa2-preshared-key. The wireless interface and all the LAN ports are already in a bridge. I split one off and moved the dhcp-server and IP address to it so I have a management interface. The bridge thus has no dhcp-server on it, and no IP address. I was sort of expecting that to work, but a client connecting to a LAN port does not get an IP address. The wireless interface does not enter "running" state. SSID and passphrase have been checked. The phone definitely supports wpa2. I can connect to the phone from a laptop. There are no firewall rules that would affect the bridge. What did I forget? Regards, K. PS: Context: Internode shut down our ADSL link with no warning. They say they emailed me, but they didn't. So I am trying to turn a mobile phone hotspot into a WAN connection :-) -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Karl Auer (kauer(a)nullarbor.com.au, he/him) work +61 2 64957435 http://www.nullarbor.com.au mobile +61 428 957160 Please feel free to deal with this email during your own working hours.

High CPU and latency spike on RB750Gr3 during downloads
by Chris Lee 04 Mar '24

04 Mar '24

Hi all, Am running RB750Gr3 firmware 7.13.5 with the out of box factory configuration for internet router. I have disabled RSTP on the bridge. On NBN FTTP 100/40 plan with NTD connected to eth1 on the RB750Gr3. Rest of my internal LAN is connected to eth2. When I max out a download or run a speed test at 100Mbps I find the CPU on the HEX is getting up to 30-35%, and on upload around 20-25%. At the same time I see in all my pings beyond my first hop ISP gateway that I get a big spike in latency which feels like the Mikrotik is struggling to process the traffic inbound. I thought the RB750Gr3 was good for up to Gigabit speeds, but even then I'm only asking for 100Mbps - is there anything I need to tweak further in the configuration to fix this or should I be looking at a newer router like the L009 series, will that provide smoother throughput ? Thanks, Chris

Mangle new routing mark from router traffic
by Steve at Digitronics 02 Mar '24

02 Mar '24

For a long time now I have been steering traffic from the LAN through the router using a <mangle : prerouting : new routing mark> and a routing rule sending that new routing mark out a specific interface. Easy and reliable. Now I want to do the same thing for traffic from the router itself, but it doesn't want to work. It seems the prerouting chain is only for traffic from interfaces, not the router itself, and I can't apply a new routing mark unless it is from the prerouting chain. Catch 22. Am I missing something? Using ROS 6.49.

OpenVPN implementation ROS 6.49
by Steve at Digitronics 01 Mar '24

01 Mar '24

Can anyone confirm for me that the OpenVPN implementation in 6.49 works with VPN providers' OpenVPN servers generally? There is chat that the OpenVPN implementation in ROS is not 'open' and I would rather be sure before I spend more time trying to get it to work with VPN service providers. -Steve

Performance on CCR2216-1G-12XS-2XQ
by Shane Clay 19 Feb '24

19 Feb '24

Hi All I've got my hands on a couple of CCR2216-1G-12XS-2XQ fitted with XQ+85MP01D 100G transceivers. Just doing some initial testing using the built in BTest Server & SpeedTest tools as a bit of initial benchmarking. So far I haven't been able to get up to 100G. The instantaneous throughput I see in the interface list is round 50G for TCP and 75G for UDP. There is absolutely no config on the devices (queues, firewall rules, etc). Interfaces are showing auto-negotiation at 100G full duplex. My guess is that this tool isn't up to the job of maxing out the link but iPerf would probably get it up there. Thoughts?
